STRONG WINDS HAMMER THE AREA

High winds powered by a fast moving
storm system swept through Indiana
Tuesday, battering Wells and the
surrounding counties.
The worst of the damage occurred
south of Poneto where Tuesday’s storm
flattened a barn, killing one horse.
Matt Kress, who owns the property
on 100W between 700S and 800S,
said the storm took out the barn and
scattered parts of it across the Norfolk
Southern railroad tracks to the east.
“We saw part of the roof laying on
the tracks and called 911,” he said.
He said a southbound train was on the
tracks but that he and his friend, Ralph
Mansbarger, got the debris off the
tracks prior to the train’s passing.
He said he was talking to a neighbor
on the phone “when all of a sudden it
was really windy.” He said he sought
shelter in the interior of his house and
when he looked out, the barn was
destroyed.
He was not sure how many horses
were in the barn, but determined there
were three. Two were freed from the
rubble, but a third horse, smaller than
the other two, was killed when the
structure fell on him.
Two other horses were outside at
the time of the fast-moving storm and
were unhurt.
The storm swept through Wells
County around 10:30 a.m. with the first
reports of storm damage coming into
the 911 emergency dispatch center at
10:45 a.m. Power lines were reported
down on Meridian Road south of Ind.
218. At 10:47 a.m., a large limb was
reported down at the corner of Wiley
Avenue and Morgan Street. At 10:52
a.m, a flag was reported down on Main
Street in front of Advance Auto Parts
creating a traffic hazard, and poles and
lines were down across 250N west
of Ind. 1 at 10:56 a.m. The poles and
lines belonged to I&M. That left the
North Oaks/Timber Ridge area without power. At 10:57 a.m., a
cable TV line was reported
down blocking the 200 block
of East South Street.
I&M power poles were
reported down on 500S
between Ind. 1 and 200E at
10:58 a.m. At 10:59 a.m.,
poles and lines belonging
to AT&T were reported
down on the road on 1000S
between 600W and 700W.
A woman called the 911
emergency dispatch center
at 11:05 a.m. and said she
was stuck in her car between
two downed power lines
on 700N between Marzane
Road and 500W. The Markle
Fire Department Rescue
Unit and Ossian Fire Department
Rescue Unit were dispatched
along with Wells
County Sheriff’s deputies. It
was quickly determined that
the lines were not electric
lines but Alltel Communications
lines. The Ossian Fire
Department was advised to
disregard and the line was
moved off the road.
At 1:09 p.m., the Nottingham
Township Fire Department
was dispatched to the
Marvin Hirschy residence,
7874E-850S. to a smoldering
I&M power pole. When
they arrived, they discovered
that the high winds
had sheared off a portion of
a barn roof that had blown
over the top of the Hirschy
residence and, in the process,
had clipped off the top of a
power pole, causing the line
to stay live but hang about
four feet off the ground and
arc to the pole. The barn
roof was blown into a field.
Firefighters stood by for
about four hours awaiting
the arrival of an I&M crew
before they could douse tyhe
small fire in the pole.
At 3:17 p.m., a power line
was reported down in a pine
tree and causing the pine
tree to smolder at the Ted
and Denise Schumm residence,
7970E-900N. Ossian
firefighters were dispatched
to the scene and awaited an
REMC crew to arrive and
turn off the power before
dousing the blaze.
There were a couple of
other locations that reported
damage to property. At the
Tony Lahr residence on
100S west of 100W, a large
limb was broken off a tree
and crashed into the front
part of the house. At the
Richard and Deena McClure
residence on 900S three
large trees were blown down
with one of them grazing a
barn.
A resident at 11881SEJeff
Road also reported
heavy storm-related damage.
The top wind gust recorded
at the 911 emergency
dispatch center was 58 mph
at the height of the storm. A
61 mph gust was recorded
at Norwell High School at
11:35 a.m.
At one point, nearly all of
Wells County was under a
tornado warning as National
Weather Service doppler
radar detected weak rotation
in the series of storms that
passed through as part of
the squall line. However, no
funnel clouds or tornadoes
were reported.
REMC spokesman John
Klingenberger reported that
in addition to the scattered
power outages, a total of
250 customers in the Liberty
Center area were without
power after the winds
sheared two mainline feeder
poles coming out of the Liberty
Center substation.
